In 1979, novelist Leslie Epstein published King of the Jews, a darkly brilliant book whose central character is a powerful, morally ambiguous man named I.C. Trumpelman. Leslie’s father was Philip G. Epstein, who (with his identical twin Julius) co-wrote the screenplay for Casablanca. Philip Epstein was named to HUAC in 1952… and died of cancer weeks later at age 42. That same year, Jeffrey Epstein’s father, Seymour Epstein, married in Brooklyn. Seymour has an 11-year gap in his records. His military file was destroyed. He died in an unexplained “accident” in Cleveland in late 1991 five weeks after Robert Maxwell. No obituary. No easily accessible death certificate. And then there’s the faces.
